PLEATS PLEASE
ISSEY MIYAKE

‘Pleats Please products deserve to be shown
on their own,’ says Hirawata. ‘It’s as simple
as that.’ At the store in Shanghai, garments
seem to float in midair. ‘We didn’t want to
design a space as such,’ says Watabe. ‘We
focused on developing modular hanging
fixtures that can be attached to any ceil-
ing.’ Slender poles descending from square
metal ceiling components were the answer.
Borrowing from the design for Bao
Bao Issey Miyake, Moment came up with a
system that can be shipped to other stores

for implementation across the globe. In
each case, interior elements such as walls or
floors can reflect the location. ‘We used alu-
minium for the walls of the Shanghai store.
If the same high-quality aluminium isn’t
available in other cities, the builder can opt
for a material that is easily obtainable in the
area. It’s a way to satisfy budgetary demands
while never compromising on Moment’s
original concept and methodology.’ ●

retail space

obsolete’

Moment borrowed from its interior design of Bao Bao Issey
Miyake in Ginza for the fashion brand’s Pleats Please store
in Shanghai, which boasts a modular display system with a
minimum of parts that can be shipped to outlets worldwide.
