To date the departments who have had the greatest increase in funding are the Department of Health and
the Departments for Education and Skills who have seen their share of spending increase from 5.4 and
4.5 per cent to 7 and 5.4 per cent respectively. Transport and public order and safety have also
experienced significant increases in funding since 1997-98. See Figure 6. Spending on science and
technology has doubled as a proportion of GDP since 1998-99, to 0.2 per cent of GDP.
