JONY’S LEGACY
Following the departure of a much-loved figure,
it’s easy to overstate their importance and
achievements at a company, but the truth is that
Ive left his mark on every little thing Apple has
built. From the minimalist chic of their 500-plus
retail stores around the world - each sporting
its own character based on local culture and
architecture, such as Apple Carnegie Library
which opened earlier this year - through
to iconic products like the iPhone and iPad,
and newer innovations like the HomePod and
Apple Watch, it’s easy to spot Ive’s design and
personality shining through.
Perhaps one of Ive’s most interesting creations is
the company’s new headquarters in Cupertino,
California. The Ring, as it’s affectionately known
by Apple employees, is a glass circle which
wraps around the Cupertino landscape, with
stunning California hardwood trees that were
imported especially for the project. According
to reports, Ive spent more than five years
working on the Apple Campus project with
fellow Brit Norman Foster, a renowned architect,
carefully planning and fine-tooth-combing
virtually every detail, from its 900 curved glass
panels down to the minuscule details like the
buttons on the elevator, designed to mimic
the iPhone home button and the brushed
aluminium finish seen on today’s MacBooks and
iPads. The cost of Apple’s new headquarters?
Little change from five billion dollars,
including a $16 million fitness center, a $427
million main building, a $113 million parking
structure and a $115 million office building to
house staff. That’s without mentioning the Steve
Jobs theatre, which cost an eye-watering $179
