Points of view
The five leading terrestrial channels serve up a good
portion of Spain’sTV diet, joined recently by a sixth
broadcaster, La Sexta, which scored a major coup in
2006 by acquiring the rights to showLa Ligafootball.
Each region also has its own set of stations, often
gathering in the lion’s share of viewers. Some, like the
ETB channels in the Basque Country andTV3 in
Catalonia, transmit in the regional tongue. You don’t
need a licence to watch any of the terrestrial channels in
Spain, but you will have to put up with adverts on all of
them as a consequence. PayTV also exists, often
serving up a higher quality of programme than you’ll
find amid the terrestrial schedules. Digital+ is the main
provider, broadcasting a range of channels that are
making significant inroads into the terrestrialTV market.
