Spain is littered with wine producing
regions, some tiny, others large and
internationally famous. Many go
unmonitored, but 61 now have DO status.
Two more, Rioja and Priorato, wear the
DOCa badge.The DO benchmark isn’t
foolproof: not all wines in a designated
region will be great, and similarly there’s
much good wine to be had in apparently
unrecognised areas. Some producers
deliberately steer clear of the inflexible
DO rules and regs on alcohol content,
grape variety, yield and so on, and make
fine wines in the process. Other areas
under vine are simply awaiting the DO
inspectors and an upgrade in status.
