This week we off er some power

to the people photographers,

with a special issue dedicated

to portraiture. As a species we

take more snaps of each other

than of anything else, but as photographers

we want to capture an image that people other

than the subject will appreciate. A good people

picture may be a posed portrait or a candid,

shot indoors or outside. It can be a wide shot

placing the subject within a setting, or a

close-up on just the eyes. You can do it with

just a basic camera and standard lens, or you

can go mad with lights and accessories. But

whatever the approach, a good portrait will

be well lit and reveal something about the

subject – and perhaps the photographer too.

I hope this week’s issue gives you plenty of

ideas and inspiration.

by photographer Daniel Howarth.

He tells us, ‘I took the image at a

place called Storthes Hall in West

Yorkshire. It’s a gorgeous woodland

full of character. On this particular

morning there was some mist

hanging around and I knew as soon

as the sun came over the horizon

there would be some lovely

diffused light. I composed the shot

so the trees framed the image with

the branches hanging over the top.

I think the path leading down looks

very inviting and makes you want to

explore further.’
