JAPAN’S biggest camera show, CES,

was held this February, and details of

lenses announced there are now being

confi rmed. Tamron’s 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III

RXD, for example, is a fast, wideangle zoom

for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras; the

lens will weigh 420g while measuring a

compact 99mm in length. The lens features

the RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive)

AF motor unit, which Tamron claims offers

fast, virtually noise-free operation, so it’s also

suitable for shooting video.

Other features of this weather-resistant

lens include 13 elements in 11 groups, with

three aspherical lens elements, two Low

Dispersion elements and one eXtra Low

Dispersion element. It has a 17cm close

focusing distance and a small 67mm front

Dog Photographer of the

Year winners revealed

THE winners of the Kennel Club’s Dog

Photographer of the Year have been

announced, with Switzerland’s Denise Czichocki

named overall winner for her image ‘Dreaming

Merlin’ (which also placed fi rst in the Oldies

category). There were almost 7,000 entries

from over 70 countries, including Australia,

Brazil, USA, China and Russia. ‘My passion for

dog photography started when I had my own,’

says Denise. ‘Over the years I have developed

my photography to become more emotional.’

Last year’s winner, Monica van der Maden

from the Netherlands, won both the Puppy

category with an image of two Weimeraner

puppies and the Dogs at Play category with a

photo of Waylon the Australian Shepherd. The

Young Pup Photographer category winner was

11-year-old Sabine Wolpert from the USA,

and the Assistance Dogs category winner

was Angelika Elendt from Germany for her

portrayal of the important role dogs play in

helping people with mental, emotional and/or

physical disabilities. Anne Geier from Austria

was named winner of the Rescue Dog award.

The overall winner gets an oil painting of their

image by award-winning artist Sara Abbott. All

category winners will have their images on

display at the Kennel Club in Mayfair, and get a

year’s membership to Flickr Pro, a SmugMug

photography website, a one-day photography

course at Nikon School UK, and a trophy and

exhibition print from Loxley Colour. This year’s

judges included top canine photographer Elke

Vogelsang, and AP editor Nigel Atherton.

All the top three winning images for each

category are on display at the Kennel Club in

London until 3 October. The exhibition is open

to the public and free to visit by appointment,

by emailing artgallerythekennelclub.org.uk.

Gitzo keeps things Fluid

TRIPOD maker Gitzo has updated its range

of heads with the Gitzo 3-way Fluid Head

GHF3W, which replaces four existing pan/tilt

heads in its line-up: the G2272M, G2271M,

G2270M, and G1570M. The new unit includes

ergonomic retractable pan-and-tilt handles

and a handy twisting bubble level, which allows

you to check the vertical and horizontal

alignment by rotating the device on the side.

You can rotate the plate holder through 90°,

which should make it easier to change between

portrait orientation and shooting from overhead

or below. The unit weighs 955g, can support

cameras and lenses weighing up to 13kg, and

has a 7cm rubberised Arca-Swiss type plate
