Synoptic situation
Multi-centred low pressure
broadly over northern Scotland
and western Scandinavia will
bring blustery winds across the
British Isles as a few sets of
fronts bring rather cloudy skies
and spells of rain in places. The
western low pressure centre,
which is named Storm Dudley,
will bring a period of gale to
storm force winds to southern
Britain and Ireland.

I
t was 60 years ago that a
windstorm wrecked much of
Sheffield, turning large parts of
the city into what looked like a
war zone. In the early hours of
February 16, 1962, winds tore down
from the Pennines into the city,
ripping off roofs, sending chimneys
crashing down and demolishing
some buildings. Buses and lorries
were flipped over like toys and roads
were blocked with bricks, slate,
glass and fallen trees.
“Nothing has been known like it
since the German Blitz,” The Times
reported. “One of the 150ft
floodlight pylons at Bramall Lane
[Sheffield United’s] football ground
was reduced to a heap of twisted
metal. A 100ft tower crane on the
site of Sheffield’s new extensions to
the College of Technology twisted
and collapsed.”
Most people were asleep when
their homes started shaking and
blocks of flats swayed. “There was a
terrific gust and the roof just
disappeared,” one man told the
Sheffield Telegraph after his house
was ripped apart. Worst hit were
houses on high ground, and estates
of postwar prefabs, which were
simply flattened or blown away.
More than 150,000 houses — two
thirds of all the city’s houses — were
damaged to some extent, many
beyond repair, leaving hundreds of
people homeless. Three people were
killed and 400 injured. “Sheffield
this morning is a city in chaos,
numbed and paralysed,” the local
newspaper said in the aftermath.
The government declared a state
of emergency in Sheffield. The
damage was estimated to be about
£3 million, equivalent to more than
£57 million in today’s money.
The violence of the storm was
caused by lee waves, with winds
bouncing up and down in waves over
the Pennines, squeezing them tight
as they reached the lee side of the
hills. As the winds rushed down,
they were funnelled through river
valleys into the city in jets of wind
reaching up to 97mph.
The most extraordinary thing was
that neighbouring Rotherham and
most of Barnsley were left
untouched by the winds.
