2. A Few Facts About the Twelve Imams
FirstImam:Amiru 'l-Mu'mininAbu'l-HasanALIal-Murtaza,sonof AbuTālib,wasbornon13thRajab, 10 yearsbeforethedeclarationofthe Prophethood(600A.D.),insidethe Kabah;becameImam,onthedeath
of the Prophet on 28th Safar, 11/632; was fatally wounded by the
poisonedswordofIbnMuljimwhileengagedinprayersatthemosque
ofKufa(Iraq),andexpiredtwodayslateron21stRamadhan,40/ 661 and
was buried at an-Najaf (Iraq).
SecondImam:AbuMuhammad AL-HASANal-Mujtaba,sonof ‘Ali,
wasbornon15thRamadhan,3/625inMedina;diedofpoisonon7thor
28th Safar, 50/670 at Medina.
ThirdImam:Sayyidu'sh-Shuhada'Abu AbdillahAL-HUSAYN, son of‘Ali, wasbornon3rdShaban,4/626inMedina;wasmartyredwith
hissons, relativesandcompanions,on10thMuharram,61/ 680 atKar-
bala(Iraq).Heandhiselderbrother,al-Hasan,weresonsofFatimahaz-
Zahra,thedaughterof the Prophet ofIslam(may peacebe uponthem
all).
Fourth Imam:Abu Muhammad ALI Zaynu 'l-Abidin, son of al-
Husayn, was born on 5th Sha`ban, 38/659; died of poison on 25th
Muharram, 94/712 or 95/713 in Medina.
FifthImam:AbuJafarMUHAMMADal-Bāqir,sonof ‘AliZaynu'l- Abidin,wasbornon1stRajab,57/ 677 inMedina;diedofpoisonon7th
Dhu 'l-hijjah 114/733 in Medina.
Sixth Imam:Abu Abdillah JAFARas-Sādiq, sonof Muhammad al-
Bāqir,wasbornon17thRabi`u'l-Awwal,83/ 702 atMedina;diedthere
of poison on 25th Shawwal, 148/765.
SeventhImam:Abu'l-Hasanal-AwwalMUSAal-Kazim,sonofJa`far
as-Sādiq,wasborninal-Abwa'(7milesfromMedina)on7thSafar129/
746;died of poisonon 25thRajab, 183/ 799 in the prison of Harunar-
Rashid at Baghdad and was buried at Kazimiyyah, near Baghdad (Iraq).
