Zakāt,accordingtotheShi‘a schoolofthought,islimitedtothefollow-
ing nine items:


I. Coins:


  1. Gold Coins. 2. Silver Coins.


II. Cattle:


  1. Goats and sheep. 4. Cows.

  2. Camels.


III. Crops:


  1. Wheat. 7. Dates.

  2. Barley. 9. Raisins.


Thesearethenineitemsonwhichzakātiswājib.Atthisstageofour
discussion,wewillnotgointodetailsoftherulestoexplainhowmuch
becomeswājibonwhichitematwhattime.Weshallonlymentionsome
details about zakāt on crops.


Zakātoncropsbecomes wajibonlywhentheproduction reachesthe
minimum nisāb (the specific amount or quantity on which zakāt be-
comeswājib).The nisāb foreachof the four cropsmentionedaboveis
846 k.g.Soifyouproducelessthan 846 k.g.ofwheat,thenthereisnoza-
kāt on you.


The amount you have to pay as zakāt taxdepends on the methods
used for watering the crops:



  • if the farm was watered by a river or by rain, then you have to pay
    10% of the total crop.

  • if the farm was watered by drawing water from a well or by using
    modern machines, then you have to pay 5% of the total crop.


Soifyouproduced100,000k.g.ofwheatandyouhadwateredyour
farmthroughanear-byriver,thenyouhavetopay10,000k.g.wheatas
zakāt.Butifyouusedmoderntechnologytowateryourfarm,thenyou
have to pay 5,000 k.g. wheat as zakāt.
