(A) The Meaning Of “Ghanimtum”

“The famous Arabic dictionary ofal-Munjid(by FatherLouis Mal–fof Beirut) says,al-ghanimandal-ghanimahmeans: (a) What is taken from
thefightingenemiesbyforce.(b)Allearningsgenerally...Furthermore,
the sayingal-ghunmbi 'l-ghurmmeansthat theprofit standsagainstex-
penses,i.e.,astheowneristhesoleproprietoroftheprofitandnobody
shares it with him, therefore only he bears all the expenses and
risk.'[34]This implies that in Arabic language al-ghanīmah has two
meanings:onethespoilsofwar,andtheotherprofit'.Theabovequoted proverbalsoprovesthatprofit'isnottheuncommonmeaning.Whena
wordintheQur'āncanbeinterpretedinmorethanoneway,itisincum-
bentupontheMuslimstoseekguidancefromtheProphetandtheAhlu
'l-bayt. Otherwise, they would be guilty oftafsīrbi 'r-ra'iy(interpreting
the Qur'ān according to one's own personal views); and this is a sin
which pushes the sinner into jahannam.
