2. With ‘Ali Amiru ’l-Mu’minīn
AfterthedeathoftheProphetwhichwasnomorethanthree,oraccord-
ingto some, sixmonths earlierthanthe deathof lady Fātimah, Hasan
was placed directly under the care of his noble father.
Hewaspartofallthestrugglesandtrialsthathisfatherwentthrough
duringtheruleofthefirstthreecaliphs.Forexample,whenAbuDharr
al-Ghifāri,thefamouscompanionoftheProphet,wastobesentintoex-
ileonordersofthethirdcaliph,peoplehadbeenforbiddenfrombidding
himfarewell.The onlypersons whodaredtocometothe city’sgateto
bidfarewellwere‘Ali,HasanandHusayn(maypeacebeuponthemall).
Thiswasalsoawayofprotestingagainsttheunjustdecisionofthethird
caliph against Abu Dharr.
In 36 A.H., ImamHasan accompaniedhis fathertoBasra,wherethe
BattleofJamaltookplace.BeforereachingBasra,Hasanwasdeputized
byhisfathertogo to Kufa,with‘Ammār binYāsir, toraise additional
forcesfortheImam’sarmy.Withhisarticulateandmovingsermons,he
exposed the falsehood of opponentsat Basra, gathered a considerable
number of people and joined his father in the Battle of Jamal.
IntheBattleofSiffinalso,Hasanwasalongsidehisnoblefathertillthe
veryend.Mu’āwiyahsent‘Ubaydullāhbin‘UmartotryandinciteHas-
anbysaying:“Stopsupporting yourfather,andwe willmakeyouthe
caliphbecausetheQurayshdonotlikeyourfatherwhoisresponsiblefor
killingmanyoftheireldersbuttheyarepreparedtoacceptyouastheir
leader.” Imam Hasan replied:“The Qurayshwanted to destroy Islam,
whereasmyfatherkilledtheireldersforAllahandforIslam.Thisisthe
basis of why they hate my father!”
Whentheoutcomeofthe arbitrationinSiffinbecameobvious,Imam
Hasanmadeaspeechandsaid:“Thesetwopersonswerechosensothat
theymayputtheQur’ānbeforetheirpersonalwhimsbuttheyactedin
the wrongmanner; therefore,they do not deserve to be consideredas
arbiters... ”
