5. His Death
Intheyear 50 A.H.ImamHasanbin‘Ali(maypeacebeuponthem)was
poisonedandmartyred byone ofhis own wives who,ashas been ac-
countedbyhistorians,hadbeenmotivatedbyMu’āwiyah.Thelatterdid
notwant the caliphatetoreturnbackto ‘Ali’sfamily;hewantedto re-
movealltheobstaclesfromthewayofhisownson,Yazidtoinheritthe
kingdom.TheUmayyids,againstallthehighprinciplesofIslamandhu-
manity,forcefullyandviolentlybarredthe BanuHashim fromburying
Imam Hasannext to hisgrandfather’s grave. He wasfinallyburied in
Jannatu ‘l-Baqi’.
Imam Hasan’spatienceandforbearance iseven acknowledge byhis
enemies.MarwanbinHakam,Mu’awiyah’sgovernorinMedinawhoal-
ways persecuted the Imam, participated in the latter’s funeral. Imam
Husaynsaid,“Whilemybrotherwasalive,youtriedyourbesttooppose
himandfightagainsthim;andnowyouareshowingupinhisfuneral!”
Marwansaid,“WhateverIdid,Ididtoapersonwhoseforbearancewas
strongerthanthismountain”whilepointingtowardsamountainoutside
Medina.
