2. What is Justice?

Justiceisthateveryperson'srightsshouldberespected,thatnodistinc-
tion should be madebetween people forno reason. For example,in a
schoolexamination,allthosewho haveacertainmarkcan moveupto
nextgrade.Thus,the principalcannotmakeanydistinctionamongthe
studentsandallowsomeofthemtoproceedtothenextclasswhilede-
privingothersofthisrightwhiletheirmarksarethesame—becausecre-
ating such a distinction among students who have the same right of
entry into the higher class constitutes an act of injustice.

Butinasituationwherethequestionofrightsdoesnotarise,discrim-
inationbetweenindividualscannotbecountedasinjustice.Forexample,
if someone wishes to invite some deprived persons to a meal, and
choosesonlysomeof theseunfortunates,hisactdoesnot constitutein-
justice—becauseheretherearenorightswhicharebeingviolated.What
isgiventothemisonlygiveninordertohelpthemandpurelyoutofa
sense of doing good.

Theobservanceofequalityandjusticeisnecessarywhenallhavethe
sameright;butwhennorightsexist,therecanbenodiscussionofequal-
ityandjustice,anddiscriminationbetweentwoindividualsinsuchcases
cannot be called injustice.

Thus, those who find difficulty in understanding the creation of
things,andaskwhyGodhasnotcreated allpeopleequalandwithout
distinction,andwhyHedoesnotbehave towardseveryonewithequal
measure, have actually not understood the real meaning of justice. If
GoddoesnotcreateanyoneatallorifHedistinguishesbetweenbeings,
nobody'srightshavebeenviolated,andthereforewecansaythatthere
isnoinjustice inspiteof thedifferencesandvariationswe findamong
human beings.

However, since God is Omniscient and Wise, and does nothing
withoutagoodpurpose,wecanask:Whatisthereasonforthedistinc-
tionsamonghumanbeings?Arethedifferencesnecessaryintheorderof
things?
