3. The Vicissitudes in the Life of Man

Certainlyyouhaveheardofthe spacecraft“Apollo”,aperfectexample
ofthe marvelousprogress manhasmadeinscience andtechnology.It
tookmanabovetheclouds,beyondtheatmosphere,andallowedhimto
sethisfeetonthesurfaceofthemoon,thusopeningthedoortoaworld
hitherto unknown to him.


Lookingatthedesign ofthisspacecraft,we see ahugemass ofnuts
and bolts, large and small, and various delicate and complex instru-
ments;thecommandmodule,themaincraft,thelunarlandingmodule,
landingandtake-offequipment,fueltanks,telecommunicationandnav-
igational apparatus,powersources, safetydevicesandsufficient stores
offood,waterandothernecessities.Eachofthesepartshasitsownrole.
Obviously, if it were not for these various parts, Apollo would never
havecomeintoexistence,anditwouldnothavebeenabletoovercome
the difficulties facing man on his way to the moon.


Thisexampleshowsusthatinawholewhosepartsareconnectedwith
each other and in harmony, variety cannot be avoided.

Now let us look at the world of existence to discoverthat diversity
hereisneitherpointless norwithoutreason.Without doubt,thebeauty
andcomplexityof thisworld isdue tothe varietyof itsparts,andwe
cannot call this diversity meaningless or unjust.


Wehaveshownabovethat injusticeexists wheredistinctionismade
whenall have the same right to use something equally. However, the
partsoftheworldhadnoexistencebeforetheywerecreated,andsothey
hadnopre-existentrightswhichwouldenableustosaythatthedistinc-
tionsbetweenthemconstitutesaninjustice.Infact,theworldofcreation
owesitsexistencetovariety,andiftherehadnotbeenanyvarietythere
wouldnothavebeenanyuniverse,therewould havebeenjustone big
uniformity.It was thisvarietythat brought into existence atoms,solar
systems, galaxies, trees, plants and animals.


Turningnow towardsvarietyinhuman life,we seethat diversityin
manisnotanexceptiontothisgeneralprincipleofvariety.Ifwelookat
