Contract of

employment

Introduction

We begin our study of employment law by looking at the distinction between
the employed and the self-employed. This distinction is very important
because it has implications regarding employee rights and liabilities.

The chapter continues by examining the contents of an employment contract.
Like any other contract it may include express and implied terms and you
should be able to explain how these terms are included.

Employers and employees owe certain duties to one another; breach of these
duties may result in legal action against the party who breached their duty.
Learn these duties and the supporting case law as they are an important part of
your syllabus.

This chapter is based on the Employment Rights Act 1996 unless otherwise
noted.
