1 medium yellow or red onion, peeled
and roughly chopped (1 cup [150 g])
1 (2-inch [5-cm]) piece ginger root,
peeled and roughly chopped
4 cloves garlic, peeled and trimmed
2–4 green Thai, serrano, or cayenne
chiles, stems removed, chopped
2 tablespoons oil
½ teaspoon asafetida (hing)
2 teaspoons cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
