Adverbs of manner, time,


place, and quantity


In this unit you will learn to use adverbs to provide information about an action:
how, when, where, and with what frequency something is, was, or will be done.

Adverbs modify the meaning of a verb in a variety of ways. Observe and note in
which way each adverb modifi es the action of the verb in the following
sentences.

Elle travaille bien. She works well.

Th e adverb bien indicates the manner in which she works.

Je travaille aujourd’hui. I work today.

Th e adverb aujourd’hui indicates when I work.

Nous travaillons régulièrement. We work reg ul arly.

Th e adverb régulièrement indicates with what frequency we work.

Vo u s t r a v a i l l e z ici. You work here.

Th e adverb ici indicates where you work.

Ils travaillent tant. Th ey work so much.

Th e adverb tant helps quantify the amount of work.

Many adverbs tell us how something is, was, or will be done. Here are a few such
adverbs.

agréablement pleasantly
agressivement aggressively
aisément with ease
bien well
brillamment brilliantly
calmement calmly
couramment fl uently
cruellement cruelly
élégamment elegantly
énormément enormously
