Among the many places we know, none are more important than the places where
we live, learn, and work. In this unit you will familiarize yourself with the many
kinds of places.

Régions, villes et villages (Regions, cities,


and towns)


Towns and cities oft en have unique characteristics according to where they are lo-
cated. For example, in a small town, one might talk about a main street (la rue
principale), whereas in a city one might talk about a downtown (le centre ville).

l’arrondissement (m.) subdivision in the city of Paris
l’avenue (f.) avenue
la banlieue suburb
le boulevard boulevard
le canton canton
la capitale capital
le centre ville city center, downtown
le département regional subdivision

Il y a vingt arrondissements à Paris. Th ere are twenty divisions in
Paris.
La Touraine est la région des châteaux. Touraine is the region of castles.
Les magasins sont au centre ville. Th e shops are in the center of
town.
Jeanne d’Arc est née dans un village Joan of Arc was born in a
de Lorraine. village in Lorraine.
L’Avenue des Champs-Elysées passe Th e avenue of the Champs-
sous l’Arc de Triomphe. Elysées passes under the Arch
of Triumph.
