This isn’t going to be one of those typical Success stories that you read
in books like this, I’m not going to talk to you about working hard, I’m
not going to talk to you about taking risks or innovating a new product.
These can be great vehicles for obtaining success, but not everyone is a
Mark Zuckerberg. I am going to talk with you about being successful as
an everyday person in an everyday business.

You see, I believe success starts at a more fundamental level, and while
everyone has a different vehicle for obtaining success, the right principles
need to be in place as a foundation. Without these principles, true lasting
success cannot be obtained, as you will lose motivation and your drive
to success (not to mention clients and customers), because despite what
you’d like to believe, true lasting success doesn’t just happen, it’s earned.

Now I know some of what I’ve already said isn’t what you may want to
hear, and in this, you should learn your first lesson about me. One of the
reasons that I’ve been able to achieve business and professional success
in my life is that I tell the unvarnished truth to my clients, whether they
like it or not. I find they like and respect that. Now, that doesn’t mean
I’m tactless with the words I choose. I like to think I’m direct, but tactful.

So, as we progress through this chapter and I share with you some of
my other secrets of success, it’s important to keep in mind that you may
not like some of them. But, I want you to know the full truth so you are
equipped to obtain real, lasting success.
