FoR sUCCess

What if you could write to a younger you and share the most valu-
able lessons you have learned through grit and determination? I have al-
ways thought I might have a guardian angel, for why else would I have
survived some of the mistakes I have made, the careless risks I have
taken and even thrived in less than optimal circumstances. We all oc-
cupy diverse interpersonal worlds, self, spouse, family, extended family,
friends, work, and community. The tools of living are mostly lacking
from early education and we must rely on personal fortitude, luck, trial
and error. Life is an amazing journey that never ceases to amaze me.
Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

My path to self empowerment came from my upbringing. I grew up as
an only child to teen parents. Kids basically, exploring their teenage
lives in the early sixties – bi-racial, multicultural and certainly question-
ing the structure of the time. You name it, they were as different as you
could imagine, yet at that moment they were intimately bound, aspir-
ing basketball star and enthusiastic cheerleader from another side of the
tracks figuring it out in New York City. Now that I am a parent of four,
I think about them reeling at the tender age of 17 when they discovered
my mother was pregnant, I can only image their fear and commitment
to carry on as some sort of rebellion. Their defiance may not have turned
out how they originally imagined, but as far as I can see, life is not an
exact science.
