Your mental processes are designed to effect choice. Mastering and
managing your mental processes means living your life by design rather
than default. It is about making decisions. Every moment holds opportu-
nity for choices and success depends on your ability to choose effectively.
You have to make choices knowing:
- What you perceive is contextual. Change the context, and your
choices change. - We all have blind spots. The information you have might be
flawed. - Your beliefs about yourself influence your choices.
As a social being, your life depends on communication.
In your interactions with others:
- Understanding means shared meaning. Communication means
ensuring common meaning. - Your words are actions. Your words “do” things to other people.
- Listening is active and creative. Other people’s words “do”
things to you.
Your job as CEO is to manage your identity and actions and those of
the company. Allow that you are not infallible and make your choices
anyway.
No matter how hard you prepare or try to avoid them, you will face
doubt, fear and uncertainty. They are paralyzing and internally destruc-
tive. You cannot afford to let them stop your deciding.
