out in my best defense about why the feedback was wrong and how I
should have received the message a long time ago. After getting over
my two-minute ego trip, I allowed the feedback to sink in and realized
of course they were right. I was still miffed about not having received
the news that I needed years ago, but I was nonetheless thankful it was
finally brought to my attention. I often wonder why it takes us so long to
share insight or observations necessary for growth. I can only conclude
one of two things is happening. Either we haven’t learned how to give
and receive feedback, or we do not create environments where feedback
from our relationships is not only encouraged but also expected.
In order to be victorious we must always be mindful of our communica-
tion. It must be clear, authentic, relevant, and specific. This applies not
only to providing such messages, but receiving them as well. Our ability
to evolve as leaders demands that we are consistent with our commu-
nication and regard it as a core principle of who we are personally and
professionally.

Knowing the tips for success does not automatically make you a success
any more than owning a piano automatically makes you a pianist. Com-
mit to taking action on the following tips:
- Do not concern yourself with what others believe you are ca-
pable of achieving. Your job is not to prove anyone wrong but to
prove yourself right. Nothing great was ever invented because
we followed the rules of logic at the time. You are an amazing
person capable of producing incredible results. - Control what you can control. Success requires that we master
utilizing the resources available to us, no matter how limited.
You will always be able to accomplish more with additional
time, talent, and resources. What will separate you from the
amateurs however, is your ability to refuse to let what you do
not have access to, be reason for your failure. Our history is
filled with stories of winners who were perceived to be not as
talented, not as strong, and not as smart. Imagine a world where
the bee is still sitting in the hive waiting to grow bigger wings
because all the other flying creatures have them.
