I will never forget being 16, driving my first car, and picking up one of
my first dates. I was on top of the world, but the feeling didn’t last long.

...In fact, we did not even make it two miles. The car ended up puttering
to a stop on the side of the road, where my ego deflated as the last drops
of gas evaporated from my tank.

The change is incredible, if you think about it. Seconds before, we were
laughing and thinking about the future, even if we could not see past
cheeseburgers and a movie. Then, in the blink of an eye, we were stuck
on the side of the road, watching others drive past. She jumped in the
drivers seat and I pushed the car to the nearest gas station. Talk about
embarrassing!

If I have learned anything over the years, it is the importance of prepara-
tion.

I suppose I ran out of gas on the way to eat because I just was not think-
ing. I risked the wrong thing. There was just too much to lose when I
