Schoolin Evanston,Il. in 1951and received
aNaval ROTC scholarshipto join the North-
westernUniversityClassof 1955.Upongrad-
uationfromNorthwestern,Jim servedin the
UnitedStatesMarineCorpsbeforeenteringthe
VirginiaTheologicalSeminaryin Alexandria.
FollowingSeminary,heservedparishesin
Kenosha,Wisconsin,Palm Beach,Florida,and
Arlington,Virginiabeforejoiningthe clergyof
the WashingtonNationalCathedral. He served
as Assistantfor Parish Developmentto Bishops
Creightonand Walker.Prior to his retirement,
he workedon the developmentof the Cathe-
dral Collegeof the Laity.Inaddition,he consult-
ed with the leadershipof congregationsin the
Dioceseof Delaware.Atthe timethe Rt. Rev.
CabellTennis servedas the bishopof Delaware.
Avoraciousreaderand scholar,Jim authored
several bookson revitalizinglocalchurches
and receivedan Honorary Doctorate of Divinity
fromthe VirginiaTheologicalSeminaryin 1997.
In additionto his wife,heissurvivedby his
son Walter of Staunton,VA,son Markand his
wife Cynthia(Lyons),of AlexandriaVA,and son
Kent and his wife Kathja(Pieper)of Columbus,
Indiana;six grandsons,two granddaughters
and four great-grandsons.Heispredeceased
by his daughter-in-law,Walter’swife,Catherine
(Cunningham).
He wasamemberof St. Paul’sChurchin
RockHall,MD and spentmanyyearsof his
retirementworkingcloselywithSt. Martin’s
Ministriesin Ridgely,MD. Jim enjoyedhis life on
the ChesapeakeBay,sailing,reading,spending
time with his ever-growingfamilyand watching
manysunsets.

onshipin 1987.
Whenhis teachingcareerended,he devoted
his timeto MontgomeryCountySeniorSoft-
ball organizingthe 60+ league.Competingin
the NationalSeniorOlympicswas ahighlight.
Formore than50 years,heand his wife
weremembersof the FrancisAsburyUnited
MethodistChurchin Rockville.Servingas
“Pap Pap” wasperhapshis greatestrole,
cheeringon his grandkidsin all theirendeav-
ors.

he spentthreeyearsof his life deployed

yearsin the militarywasspentin the DC
area,wherehe was stationedat Quantico,
HeadquartersMarineCorpsand the Penta-
gon.He retiredin 1990as aLieutenant
Colonel.

ty,which servedhim well whenhe undertook
asecondcareeras ajournalistspecializing
in militaryand nationalsecurityaffairs.He

on freelanceprojects.Underthe leadership
of Dan Ratherand MaryMapesat CBS News,
he wasinstrumentalin the uncoveringof
the AbuGhraib scandal,whichgarnered
PeabodyAwards for the team.Laterdrama-
tizedin the film “Truth,”Rogerwas aston-
ishedto see himselfportrayedwith verveby

He committedhis post-militarylife to com-

Kay foundedand becamePresidentof Art-
Works for Freedom,anon-profitorganization.
Through her compassionate lens,she
showedthatall formsof art can be used
to fightmodernslavery.InJanuary2022,she
was honoredby beingselectedfor the "70
Over70 Award”grantedby HelpAgeUSA,
recognisingthat“shededicatedherselfto
buildingawarenessabouthumantrafficking
and modern-dayslaveryusingart exhibits,
performances,and films.”
Kay alsopublishedtwo remarkablebooks,
The Us and The They:Prejudiceand Empathy
in America'sSmallestCounty,and the coura-
geousSelf Examinationwhereshe turnedthe
cameraonher ownbodyafterexperiencing
breastcancer.
Kay will be missedby her husband,Lee
Rosner,her sisters,Anne Pehrischand Sue
Heringman,her stepson,Ari Rosner-Salazar,

Kay was bornin NewOrleans,LA, grewup in
Los Angeles,CA, and graduatedfromSarah
LawrenceCollegein 1966.WithaFulbright
Fellowship,she spentayear teachingEnglish
insidethe doublewallsof the Women’s
Collegeof AligarhMuslimUniversity.
In 1968,Kay marriedAkoshChernushand
livedin Spainand in Paris whereKay worked
at the NewYork Timesbureau.Theywere
later divorced.
Backin the US,Kay becameaphotographer
and, overthe next43 years,rose to become
atop,free-lancecommercialand fine arts
photographer.Kay’sartworkis includedin
permanentUS governmentaland privatecol-
