Obedience
Manyparentsseethegoalofparentingas
gettingtheirchildrentoobeythem.Is
obediencetheprimarygoalofparenting?In
Colossians3:20(NRSV),theApostlePaul
toldchildrento“obeyyourparentsin
everything,forthisisyouracceptableduty
intheLord.”TheGreekwordheusedfor
“obey”meanstolistenattentively,to
hearken,tohearandunderstand.Itisnot
thesamewordheusedelsewhere—a
militaryterm—tomeansubjectionortobe
subdued.Thefirstwordimpliesa
willingnesstolistenandinternalizewhatthe
parentistryingtoconvey.Thesecondword
bringstomindanunquestioningmilitary
responsetoacommand.Thetruegoalof
parentinggoesbeyondsimplydemandinga
behavior.Thetruegoalofparentingisan
internalizationofwhatisrightandwrong,
goodandbad,moralandimmoral.
