of graduatestudentsthisquestion:“Whatdoyouthinkapersoninmidlife(middle-aged
person)looksandactslike?”Theirmostcommonanswerwasthis:“Amidlifepersonis
someonewhoisold—olderthanus.”Ironically,themajorityof thesegraduatestudentswere
intheirthirties;yet,theydidnotseethemselvesonthethresholdof middleage.
Societyisfearfulof growingolder—especiallyWesternsocieties.Consideradvertisements
foranti-agingproducts.Theadvertisingindustryaddstosocietalfearof agingbyportraying
aginginnegativetones.If youarelucky,theadssay,midlifeandbeyondmightinvolvea
sportscar,butchancesare,you’llreallybetoo“old”toenjoyit.Fewadsevenincludeolder
