To get a feel for the "tentative" sound of first inversions, compare a C to D change with C/E to D/F#. Also compare
Em to F#m with Em/G to F#m/A.
Major-chord first inversions that are easy to play on guitar are C, D, F and G; for minor chords, they are Am, Bm,
C#m, Dm, Em, F#m and Gm.
