Of these four, it is major and minor chords that concern the songwriter most. The major/minor fluctuation, along
with the possibility of key changes, is one of the glories of the Western musical tradition. Diminished and
augmented chords are less important, having only specialized applications. Most of the basic chord shapes that
guitarists strum take these three notes and double or triple them for a fuller sound.
