Using Modulation to Contrast Different Sections
Modulation can effectively contrast different song sections. 'You Never Give Me Your Money' starts in A minor,
goes to C major for the bridge and then to A for the last verse. The contrasts are enhanced by tempo and arrangement
features. Other multiple key songs include 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' (A, F, G), 'Days' (D, F, Dm), 'Band On
The Run' (D, Am, C), 'Jungleland' and 'Word On A Wing'.
'Fortress Round My Heart' has a verse in Gm, Eb, F#m but the chorus is in Em. 'Something In The Air' moves from
E to F# to C to Ab. 'Londinium' goes from A in the verse to B in the chorus to C# in the last chorus. 'Pinball Wizard'
has an intro in Bm, goes to B and D and has a final verse in A. A lover's exuberance is depicted in 'The Happening'
by a mid-verse jump from G major to Bb major, a bridge modulation to E minor and a last verse that goes up a
semitone (half-step) from the first verse in order to go Ab major and then to B.
