Major Chords
Major chords are the most important in songwriting; everything else revolves around them. They are the most
flexible in conveying the widest range of moods. By setting and arrangement of how they are played, a huge variety
of emotions can be expressed. Compared to minor chords, major chords are often said to sound positive, upbeat or
happy. Even so, it is possible to express sadness with them.
Guitar chords can be broadly divided into those that have open strings and those that do not. Open-string chords
have a more resonant quality than fully fretted chords. The chords of A, C, D, E and G on the guitar have effective
openstring shapes, and the other major chords are derived from these shapes. If a chord has no open strings in it,
with or without a barre, it is a movable shape and can be positioned up and down the fretboard.
