way the chorus of 'Knowing Me Knowing You' starts on V and no sooner lands on I ("do") than it moves off to IV and
then V. 'My Love' comes in on IV, uses a VImaj and doesn't land on chord I until bar eight, at a slow tempo.
Displacement is stronger if I moves into the middle of the sequence. 'Wuthering Heights' has a chorus with an excellent
example of displacement: IV II V I IV V I IV.
Chord I is made to feel like a place where you cannot rest. The music keeps moving off it and onto IV. The ultimate
displacement is to miss out I altogether. 'When You're Young And In Love' has a chorus of VI II IV V. 'There Must Be
An Angel (Playing With My Heart)' creates anticipation by delaying chord I to the end of each phrase: II V VI IV IV V
bIII I.
Notice the unusual resolution from bIII to I, instead of the more predictable IV-I or V-I.

Substitution
In order to create a more interesting musical effect, it is possible to substitute turnarounds for each other in such a way
that minor chords turn into their relative majors (and vice versa) but retain the same position in the sequence. For
example:

Main turnaround
I VI IV V: C Am F G

Substitutes
I VI II V: C Am Dm G
I VI IV V: C Am F Em

This kind of substitution can be powerful for illustrating something in the lyric. Imagine a love song with the turnaround
C Am F G.
Verse:
C Am F G
The world is suddenly strange, I feel a fear.
C Am F G
My steps falter, can't find my way, the path is unclear.
C Am F G
I seem to stumble around in the dark in the middle of the day
C Am Dm G
Right is wrong since you've gone far away
The switch from F to Dm in the last line puts extra weight on the word "gone" – which is, after all, the reason the speak
is complaining. Instead of merely repeating a single turnaround, a little bit of variety is introduced.
Another type of substitution is to retain the root-note sequence but use techniques such as "reverse polarity" (major to
minor, minor to major).

The Stretched Turnaround
There are two basic methods for "stretching" a turnaround. First, simply stay on a
