Imposing the Emperialist Language

The colonialists imposedtheir languagein the teachingsystems and
madeitapartofthestudyingprogramsonwhichsuccessandfailurede-
pend. The French made their language the pivot of the total lessons.
Theysaid,“Firstofall,schoolsshouldbeactingasinstitutesforlearning
French.”.
TheEnglishalsoimposedtheirlanguageintheircoloniesandgaveita
specificlesson.Theyoptedfortheirlanguageasthemaintongueinthe
institutesofmedicine, chemistry,andphysicsinadditiontothe Arabic
literatureandtheIslamichistory.EachMuslimwho desirestoobtaina
certificate should study in the European institutes or their graduates.
Mohammed Saeed Al-Urfi comments, “It is definitely the ugliest, the
mostterrible, andthe nastiestshame thatthe Arabs receivethe artsof
theirlanguage of that glorioushonor andancient civilizationfrom the
enemiesoftheirreligionandlanguage. Thisissurelythe evidentdevi-
ation.Wehaveneverheardthatthearbitersandreferencesofanyelev-
ated or humble language are other than its sons. Unfortunately, the
presentArabnationisexcluded.Historyhasneverreferredtoanation
receiving its language from its waylaying enemies.”.
Imposing the imperialists’ language in schoolsand institutes serves
onlytheirnationality,language, interests,andcupidity,andestablisha
permanentrelationbetweenthosescientificinstitutesandthe imperial-
ists.MohammedSaeedsays,“Theseforeignlanguagesarethemainreas-
onbeyondthe publicityof theforeignpropagandaandthe vilepartof
theircivilization.TheyarethepathsthroughwhichtheWestcouldseize
theArabcountriesaswellasthoseintheeast.Itmadethisnationforbear
thetraditionsandlosethereligion,language,fashion,andeverythingre-
lated to the past. The most unfamiliar matter is that the foreign lan-
guagesaredissatisfiedinequatingtheArabicinthesharesofstudying,
consideration,andsuccess.Theyexcelled itin alltheseshares.Mastery
ofoneforeignlanguageissufficientforobtainingacertificateevenifthe
Arabicisunmastered.Therefore,thegovernmentsarehighlyconcerned
with teachers of European languages by picking the most masterful
teachers for this mission even in primary schools. Hence, pupils are
broughtuponcherishingtheforeignlanguagesastheynoticethegov-
ernmentsandnationcare forthismanner,andnoticetheteachers’abil-
ity, authority, respect and distinctive payment. All these make pupils
waste their national spirits.”.
