Islamtends tomakethe armedforcesenjoyhigh spiritsofpersever-
ance,faith, unity, congruity,and consistency. Discrepancy isthe main
cause of every defeat and loss. God says:
O,youwhobelieve!Whenyoumeetaparty,thenbefirm,andremem-
ber Allah much, that you may be successful.
AndobeyAllahandHisApostleanddonotquarrelforthenyouwill
beweakinheartsandyourpowerwilldepart,andbepatient.Surely,Al-
lah is with the patient.
Surely,AllahlovesthosewhofightinHiswayinranksasiftheywere
a firm and compact wall.
ImamAli(a)instructedMohammed,hisson,duringthebattleofJamal
tobeperseverantandfirm.Hesaid,“Donotmoveevenifthemountains
moved.Biteonthe molarandfirmyourfeetintheground.Raiseyour
sighttothelastoftheoppositearmy.,castdownyoureyes.,andrealize
that triumph is God’s affair.”.
Thesegoldenwordsintroducethebestdescriptionoffirmnessinbat-
tlefields. The Imam stressed on these instructions in many situations
when he instructed the commanders.
