al-WasitisoughtImam ar-Rida’sadvicewhenanill-naturedmanasked
forhis daughter’shand. The Imam told himnot to give her to the ill-
naturedindividuals..BooksoftheIslamicheritagearefullofreportsthat
urge womenonidentifyingthe men that areexpected to be theirhus-
bands before agreeing to marriage, so as not to give birth of evil
offspring.
Third,asanIslamicrule,bothspouseshavethechoiceofrevokingthe
matrimonialcontractsifanyofthemisproventohaveamentalirregu-
larity, a physical disability, or other defects that the jurists identify.
Imamas-Sadiq(a)said,“Matrimonyisrevocableincasesofleucoderma,
leprosy, insanity, and cystocele.”.
ThisrulingsavestheIslamicsocietyfromsuchdiseasesthatcausere-
tardationandsocialweakness.ThejurisprudentialbasesofIslamsustain
themodernarticlesthat theinternationalhealthorganizationshavede-
clared.Thespouses’blood,forexample,shouldbeanalyzedbeforemar-
riageforrecognizingwhetheranyofthemisaffectedbysexualdiseases
suchasrrhoea,syphilis,orothersthatarethemaincauseofthebabies’
blindnessorvenerealdiseases.Thecalamitiesofsuchdiseasesareinher-
itedgeneticallycausingmentalandphysicaldisabilitiesbesidetheother
party’s misery,suffering, andother mentalproblems that depriveof a
content life.
