Leeds United are set to face a Football
Association investigation over missiles
thrown by supporters at Manchester
United players during yesterday’s
Premier League game.
Anthony Elanga, the 19-year-old
winger, was struck by at least one object
as United celebrated their third goal in
a dramatic 4-2 victory. Objects were

The Game
United star hit by missile
Ian Whittell Elland Road after United scored their
opening goal in the first half.
At half-time the United captain,
Harry Maguire, was seen handing a
missile to the assistant referee as the
teams headed down the tunnel.
The FA will wait for the report from
the referee, Paul Tierney, before decid-
ing whether to charge Leeds, but, with
Elanga requiring treatment and the
game having to be delayed before it
could be restarted, that appears to be a
certainty. “As far as I know, there is
some investigation going on from
Leeds,” Ralf Rangnick, United’s interim
manager, said. “Obviously, things like
that should not happen.”
Rangnick ran on to the field in the
final minute of the game to try to pull
United players away from an alterca-
tion that had developed between the
teams. He too could face censure,
although he will argue that he was
acting purely as a peacemaker in
entering the field of play. “I didn’t want
anything to happen, no yellow or red
cards,” he said. “At times like this it’s
important to cool things down.”
Visiting supporters were not entirely
blameless, however, with United fans
throwing red smoke flares on to the
pitch before the game, and after their
side’s third goal.
The Leeds head coach, Marcelo
Bielsa, claimed not to have seen any of
the incidents, but said: “Any excess
[behaviour] other than supporting the
team shouldn’t be approved.”

Heat on Gemili
to quit coach
One of the world’s leading athletes has
expressed his surprise that the British
sprinters Adam Gemili and Laviai
Nielsen have not quit a coaching group
embroiled in a doping scandal and
allegations of sexual misconduct.
Christian Taylor, the double
Olympic triple jump champion, has
told The Times that he is among a num-
ber of athletes who left Rana Reider’s
Florida-based Tumbleweed Track Club
— saying “enough is enough” when
news of Blessing Okagbare’s failed
drugs tests was followed by notification
that their American coach was the sub-
ject of an investigation into claims of
sexual misconduct involving an
18-year-old female athlete. UK Athlet-
ics responded by warning Gemili, 28,

Foden attack
‘shocks’ City
Manchester City have said that they are
“shocked and appalled” by an attack on
their forward Phil Foden and his
mother after a video of the incident
appeared on social media.
The footage is believed to have been
filmed at the AO Arena in Manchester
on Saturday night, where the
21-year-old and his mother, Claire,
were watching the fight between Kell
Brook and Amir Khan.
It shows Foden walking away as a
group of men direct verbal abuse at
him, before Claire confronts them and
pushes one. The man responds by try-
ing to punch her in the face. Fighting
ensues and at one point Foden can be
seen trying to break it up. “The club is
aware of a video which has circulated
on social media showing Phil Foden
and his family being harassed and
