mass death. This
programme has some
extraordinary
moments, not least the
only known unofficial
recording of Hitler
speaking privately.
The bombast and
self-pity is there in
his conversation with
the Finnish Field
Marshall Carl Gustav
Mannerheim, but it’s
delivered in an eerily
soft tone.

Rise of the Nazis
BBC2, 9pm

It’s January 1942 and,
furious at losing the
Battle of Moscow,
Hitler has sacked or
sidelined his top
generals and promoted
inexperienced
yes-men. Stalin’s
determination to clip
the wings of his top
general, Georgy
Zhukov, also leads to

voiced by the actors
Pooky Quesnel and
Colin McCredie.
Whatever the truth of
the claims, it seems
clear that the
murderers’ alleged
antipathy to Smith was
probably justified since
he blew the whistle on
the pair on October 7,
1965, after witnessing
the unimaginably
horrific killing of the
teenager Edward Evans.

Smith (who died in
2012), we hear the
criminologist Professor
David Wilson opining
that the disclosures
offer a new slant on the
killings. Where this
programme succeeds
— and it’s not a
particularly pleasant
viewing experience —
is in its detailed
analyses of the case and
the chance to hear the
pair’s chilling words

singer Janie Jones,
who met Hindley in
Holloway prison (Jones
was there for vice-
related crimes). We
learn that the pair may
have considered killing
Hindley’s sister
Maureen and her
husband, David Smith,
whom they also sought
to blame for the
murders. Alongside a
2003 interview with

disclosures in this new
three-part series seem
to show them in an
even more hideous
light. There is naturally
very little that can be
claimed to be new
about a case that has
horrified and obsessed
so many people since
the pair were arrested
in 1965. However, there
is a fresh spin here on
letters sent by both
