What to Eat, What to Avoid

For Paleo Diet novices, one of the key issues that
frequently arises is the proper amount of plant and animal
foods that should be eaten on a regular basis. The best
way to answer this question is to follow the example of our
hunter-gatherer ancestors. My research demonstrates that
although there was no single Stone Age diet, animal food
was always favored over plant food. Our analysis of 229
hunter-gatherer societies showed that animal foods
composed about 60 percent of the total daily caloric intake.
On the Paleo Diet, you should therefore try to obtain a little
more than half of your calories from lean meat, organ
meats, poultry, seafood, and fish. The remainder should
come from plant foods. A general rule of thumb is to put a
fist-sized piece of meat or fish on your plate and then fill the
remainder of your plate with fruits and veggies.

Although you will entirely eliminate three food groups
(grains, dairy, and legumes) along with processed foods,
you will be amazed at the astonishing diversity of healthy
and delicious foods that you may never have considered.
Let’s examine these incredibly varied foods.
