“Did you not hear?”, ‘Umar [r] said,
“I said half. Give me one ear-ring.”
“But my dear husband”, laughed his
wife, “If I give you one ear-ring
nobody will buy the other one alone,
and even if I keep the one it will be
worthless to me. Therefore, I give
you both!”
‘Umar [r] was delighted with the
amount of goods he was able to
give from his household. His arms
were laden with every kind of valu-
able, and his children trotted along
behind carrying the rest.
On the way to the blessed Nabi
Muhammad’s [s] house he spied
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr [r] headed in
the same direction. Abu Bakr [r] did-
n’t seem to be carrying much, as far
