It has been a pleasure working again with Bob Stern, my editor at Chapman
and Hall/CRC Press, and I thank him for his continued support, encour-
agement and patience. Thanks also to Robert Ross and to my ever-patient

I am grateful to a number of people for their suggestions for this second
edition, including L. Benjauthrit, U.E. George, A. Madzvamuse, R. Medina,
K.A. Nguyen, C. Wdowski and G. Zahedi. I must give special thanks to my
colleague Mark Demers, whose many thoughtful comments and suggestions
have, to my view, led to a much improved second edition, and to Michelle
Ghrist and her PDE class at the U.S. Air Force Academy, for their very
thorough list of suggested changes. In addition, I must not forget all of the
students I have taught using the first edition of this book at Fairfield U.
I must thank Robin Campbell yet again for her excellent work in typing
