8.4 Flow of Traffic


Those of you who live in a big city know what we mean by traffic. A branch of civil engineer-
ing deals with the design and layout of highways, roads, and streets and the location and tim-
ing of traffic control devices that move vehicles efficiently. In this section, we will provide a
brief overview of some elementary concepts related to traffic engineering. These variables are
time related. Let us begin by defining what we mean by traffic flow. In civil engineering, traffic
flow is formally defined by the following relationship:
