68 Chapter 3 Introduction to Engineering Design
with uniformity in size of parts and correct engineering design practices so that public safety
is ensured. In fact, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) discussed at its
first meeting in 1880 the need for standardized sizes for screws. Here we will focus on some
of the larger standardization organizations in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. We
will briefly describe the role of these organizations and how they may interact. Among the
more well-known and internationally recognized organizations are the American National
Standards Institute (ANSI), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the
Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the British Standards Institute (BSI), the German
Deutsches Institut für Normung(DIN), the FrenchAssociation Française de normalisation
(AFNOR), the SwedishStandardiserigen I Sverige(SIS), the China State Bureau of Quality and
Technical Supervision (CSBTS), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO),
and the European Union Cmarking. We will briefly describe these organizations in the
following sections.

in the United States:
The American National Standards Institute
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was founded in 1918 by five engineering
societies and three government agencies to administer and coordinate standards in the United
States. The ANSI is a not-for-profit organization, which is supported by various public and
private organizations. The institute itself does not develop the standards, but instead it assists
qualified groups, such as various engineering organizations, with the development of the stan-
dards and sets the procedures to be followed. Today, the American National Standards Institute
represents the interests of well over a thousand companies and other members. According to the
American National Standards Institute, there are over 13,000 approved ANSI standards in use
today, and more standards are being developed.
