CStandards

All products sold in Europe must now comply with Cstandards. Before the formation of the
European Union and the utilization of Cstandards, manufacturers in Europe and those export-
ing to Europe had to comply with different standards based on the requirements that were dic-
tated by a specific country. Cprovides a single set of safety and environmental standards that
is used throughout Europe. The Cmarking on a product ensures conformity to European
standards. The letters Ccome from the French words Conformité Europeenné.

Other Internationally Recognized

Standardization Organizations

The British Standards Institute (BSI) is another internationally known organization that deals
with standardization. In fact, BSI, founded in 1901, is one of the oldest standardization bod-
ies in the world. It is a nonprofit organization that organizes and distributes British, European,
and International standards. Other internationally recognized standardization organizations
include the GermanDeutsches Institut für Normung(DIN), the FrenchAssociation Française de
normalisation(AFNOR), the SwedishStandardiserigen I Sverige(SIS), and the China State
Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (CSBTS). Visit the Web sites of these organiza-
tions to obtain more information about them. A comprehensive list of various standardization
organizations and their Web addresses (if available) that you may find useful when searching for
information about organizations dealing with engineering standards and codes follows.
