3.13 Examples of International Standards and Codes 73

Specific Examples of Standards and Codes

in Use in the United States

Next we will look at some specific standards and codes that are used in various engineering products
and practices in the United States. Tables 3.6 and 3.7 show examples of these standards and codes.
In the next three sections, we will describe the standards for drinking water and the air that
we breathe. These are standards that affect all of US, every day! The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) of the United States sets the standards as required by the U.S. Congress. The
Clean Air Act was signed into law in 1970, and the Safe Drinking Water Act was enacted by
Congress in 1974.
