he storms this month may
seem unusual, but violent
storms have struck before
in February. “The streets,
which were everywhere
full of brickbats and tiles flung down
by the extraordinary wind the last
night... It was dangerous to go out
of doors; and hearing how several
persons have been killed today by
the fall of things in the streets,”
wrote Samuel Pepys in London
It was one of the worst storms on
record to hit southern England, on
February 28, 1662, in the modern
Gregorian calendar. Daniel Defoe
investigated the storm years later
and described how the winds came
with a barrage of rain, hail and
thunder. He listed damage such as
4,000 trees uprooted in the New
Forest, thousands felled elsewhere,
and buildings severely damaged. He
said there were 123 deaths on land,
although the exact number remains
uncertain, and even less was known
about those killed on wrecked ships.
A tract entitled Mirabilis Annus
published later in 1662 gave details
of the damage to churches.
“Windows were blown in at
Tewkesbury, and the cathedrals at
Worcester and Hereford were
damaged. Finchingfield church,
Essex, suffered the loss of its spire
which fell into the nave. The spire of
the Tower church at Ipswich was
similarly blown off and fell, upper
end foremost, into the church.”
Windmills were often wrecked in
high winds in those days. Ralph
Josselin, vicar of Earls Colne in
Essex, recorded in his diary: “The
wind rose and was violent beyond
measure, overturning a windmill at
Colchester wherein a youth killed.”
He went on: “Divers barns, stables,
outhouses, trees, rending divers
dwellings few escaped ... throwing
down stacks of chimneys, chimneys,
part of houses. Whitehall twice on
fire that day. The wind was general
in England and Holland sea coast,
but not in Scotland.”
Strangest of all, several people in
Hereford were said to have been
hurled up in the air, one of them to a
height of six yards, possibly lifted up
by a powerful tornado.Weather Eye
