Oisin Murphy’s career is on hold again
after he was banned for 14 months for
two breaches of the alcohol limits and
for twice breaking coronavirus rules.
The champion Flat jockey admitted
lying to British Horseracing Authority
(BHA) officials about his holiday desti-
nation in order to avoid the required 14-
day isolation period on his return. He
went on to have 11 victories when he
should not have been competing, which
handed him the 2020 jockeys’ champi-
onship by a margin of eight winners.
Murphy, who lost his licence for three
months after testing positive for
cocaine in France in October 2020, was
also sanctioned for twice testing above
the permitted alcohol limit at race-
courses last year. He bared his soul at a
hearing yesterday, speaking of how he
has battled with an alcohol addiction.
“My father is a recovered alcoholic,”
he said. “I was warned about the
dangers but I couldn’t resist.”
The judicial panel, chaired by James
O’Mahony, showed relative leniency
over the alcohol breaches but was more
severe when it came to the jockey
breaking coronavirus rules, handing
down three 11-month suspensions — to
run concurrently — for conduct “prej-
udicial to the reputation of the sport.”

racecourses while he should have been
self-isolating, and also rode at the
Kingsclere yard of Andrew Balding.
He told the BHA that he had been “of
the opinion I was healthy and capable
of going back to work.” In making that
decision, Murphy not only put others at
risk but also threatened the continua-
tion of the sport at a time when restric-
tions on so many events were in place.
O’Mahony told Murphy: “However
affected by fiction you may have been,
we conclude you thought you were

Murphy banned until 2023 for holiday lie

In September 2020 Murphy travelled
to the Greek island of Mykonos, having
received a seven-day suspension for
careless riding at Ayr. However,
Mykonos had been placed on the gov-
ernment’s red list shortly before his
flight and he claimed instead that he
had taken a holiday at Lake Como, Italy.
When questioned, Murphy twice
told BHA officials that he had been to
Lake Como. When it was suggested
that he had been to Mykonos, he insist-
ed that he had never been there.
He doubled down on the deception
with his pictures on social media, say-
ing that he was on holiday in Lake
Como and again in an interview on the
Sporting Life website. When he
returned he said that he would have to
work off his “Italian bulge”.
“I knew when I set foot on that plane
to go to Mykonos that I was going to be
telling some people that I wasn’t going
there and automatically I was commit-
ting a lie,” Murphy said. “I got straight
back into riding. I was asked by some-
one from the BHA where I’d been and
I felt I just had to keep up the lie.”
When questioned again and faced
with further proof, Murphy finally pro-
vided a letter in May last year to the
BHA confirming that he had in fact
gone to Mykonos. After returning from
the island, Murphy competed at 11

above the rules and the law.” He won
the 2020 championship by a margin
ahead of William Buick and, although
he might well have pushed himself even
harder and still retained the title, had he
missed those two weeks, Buick is
entitled to feel aggrieved.
Ten days were added to Murphy’s ban
for testing above the alcohol threshold
at Chester last May, and another
90 days for a failed breathalyser test at
Newmarket in October. Those bans
have been backdated to December 8,
when he handed in his licence to seek
“medical help”. He cannot reapply for
his riding licence until February 26
next year. He also received a £31,111 fine,
equal to the earnings he made while he
should have been self-isolating.
Anyone who has addiction problems,
as Murphy has, deserves support and
jockeys perhaps deserve it more than
most, given the restrictions on their
freedoms that they endure for their
jobs. While there has to be sympathy for
the Irishman on that front, and some
admiration that he has now confronted
his demons, his decision to break Covid
rules and to lie to the racing authorities
is unacceptable. He is still relatively
young by Flat jockeys’ standards and
will doubtless bounce back. He now has
plenty of time to sort out his personal
life and to reflect on his poor decisions.

Fence facelift

to help horses

Ellie McDonald

Parts of fences at all of Britain’s
National Hunt racecourses will be re-
painted in white after scientists found
that horses could not properly see the
orange colour traditionally used.
Next month, Stratford will become
the first course in the UK to repaint the
take-off boards and guard rails on their
jumps, with researchers from Exeter
University having found that the
orange colour used at the moment is
seen as a shade of green by horses,
which means that the obstacle blends in
with the turf.
After the introduction of the changes
at Stratford on March 14, Hexham
(March 17) and Newton Abbot (March
25) will follow suit, before the other 40
jumps courses in Britain switch from
orange to white by December 2022,
with an estimated 368 fences and 2,312
hurdle panels due to be changed.
Richard Phillips, who has used white
fences at his training yard in Adlestrop,
Gloucestershire, for several years, was
involved in the research.
“I am convinced that changing the
colour of jumps will be of immense
benefit to the horses, riders and the
sport as a whole,” he said.
