The initial and final setting times of hydrated lime are determined using Vicat’s apparatus in
the same way as that for Portland cement. Here in this test lime putty is used instead of cement
mortar.

The test is done to find the quality, i.e., the unsoundness or disintegration property of lime
using the Le-chatelier apparatus.
To test hydrated lime, cement, hydrated lime and standard sand 1 : 3 : 12 are mixed dry. The
mix is then gauged and mixed 12 per cent by mass of water calculated on the dry mixture.
Three moulds, greased internally, are placed on a small non-porous plate and filled with the
