Macro Technique | Scanography

The green gladioli give this image an almost mystical feel. The high image quality is due mainly to the low
overall subject contrast. All types of sensors – whether in scanners or digital cameras – quickly reach the
limits of their image capture powers when confronted with excessive contrast.

Author Werner Abel used a scanner to
get right up close to his natural subjects in
this extraordinary book. His scanographs
display a depth of detail and richness of
color that often go unnoticed in small sub-
jects. As a gesture of respect to his tool of
choice, the author designed the book’s
cover to open upward like the lid of a scan-
ner. The images reproduced in this article

all come from the book, which is
only available in German, but which com-
municates its subject using very few words
and spectacular visuals.
