ABOUT THIS PHOTO The Sky Flyer photographed against the setting sun. Taken at 1/50 second, f/3.2, and ISO 1600.

For rides that move in a very easily defined pat-
tern, the slower shutter speeds help to create a
great image of the lights. However, for rides that
move in multiple directions or lack a specific pat-
tern, including the Sky Flyer, shown in Figure
5-24, you have to get the shutter speed just right.
Rides like this are more difficult to shoot to cap-
ture the motion and make it possible to see that
there are people on the ride. To get a great photo

that freezes the action, it is all about the timing
and watching how the ride works. I noticed that
the ride seemed to go slower at the start as the
riders got up to speed and at the end as they
slowed down. By using a shutter speed of 1/50
second, I was able to freeze the motion and
still show the lights of the ride against the
darkening sky.
