Assignment

Create a light painting in your home

This assignment is to create light painting with subjects you already have around the house. The
first part of this assignment is to pick a good subject, something that will be fun to experiment
with and that you can light from various angles and get different patterns. Then upload the
image to the website and see what others came up with.

For this assignment, I chose an orchid that I have at home and set it up on a small table with a
piece of black matte foam board as a background. I wanted to use the LED flashlight because I
liked the color of the light it produced, but because it is quite bright I knew I would have less time
to work with it. I set the shutter sped to bulb mode, used a very small f-stop of f/22, and set the
ISO to 200. The total time I had the shutter open for this exposure was 10 seconds.

My idea was to trace the orchid from the top to the bottom so that the light looked like it was
coming from the top right. Keep in mind that you can vary the look by using different flashlights
or even changing the background or angle of the camera.

Between every shot I checked to make sure the focus was still on the orchid and my moving
around with the flashlight hadn’t moved anything.
